Spain’s Essential Emergency Kit Items

When driving in Spain, you’ll need to ensure your vehicle complies with Spanish regulations regarding mandatory emergency equipment. Here's a guide to the items that will help keep you safe on the roads and also help avoid potential fines.

1. Reflective HighVisibility Jacket

Requirement: All drivers must carry a reflective high-visibility jacket.

In a breakdown or emergency, you must wear a reflective jacket before exiting the vehicle, especially on motorways or high-traffic roads. It’s recommended that you keep the jacket in the car with you and not in the boot, as you’ll need to wear it when you step out of the vehicle. While only the driver's jacket is mandatory, it's advisable to have additional jackets for all passengers.

Storage: Keep the jacket in the passenger compartment for immediate access.

2. Warning Triangles

Requirement: Vehicles must carry at least one warning triangle. However, carrying two is recommended to ensure compliance and enhance safety.

Usage: In case of a breakdown, place one triangle approximately 50 metres behind the vehicle to warn approaching traffic. If you have a second triangle, put it about 50 metres in front of the car, especially on two-way roads, to alert oncoming traffic.

Note: From 1 January 2026, the traditional warning triangles will be replaced by the V16 emergency light as the mandatory warning device. This change aims to improve safety by allowing drivers to signal their vehicle's presence without exiting.

3. V16 Emergency Light

Requirement: The V16 emergency light will become mandatory from 1 January 2026. This device emits a flashing amber light visible from all directions and includes geolocation features to inform authorities of your vehicle's position. citeturn0news26

Usage: In the event of an emergency or breakdown, place the V16 light on the roof of your vehicle to alert other road users. Its design allows deployment without exiting the vehicle, enhancing safety.

Note: While not yet mandatory, it is advisable to buy a V16 device in preparation for the upcoming regulation. Ensure the device complies with the specifications set by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT).

4. Spare Wheel and Tools or Tyre Repair Kit

Requirement: Vehicles must be equipped with a spare wheel and the necessary tools for replacement or, alternatively, a tyre repair kit.

Note: This requirement does not apply to vehicles equipped with runflat tyres or similar technology.

5. Spare Bulb & First Aid Kits

Recommendation: A first aid kit, though not legally required, is advisable for addressing minor injuries or medical emergencies quickly.

6. Documentation

Ensure you obtain the following:

Driving Licence: A valid driving licence is mandatory.

Vehicle Registration Document: This document confirms your vehicle's registration details.

Insurance Certificate: Proof of valid insurance is required.

MOT Certificate: This certificate confirms your vehicle's roadworthiness.

Identification: Carrying your passport is mandatory.
